Dr Charles Mwandawiro

Charles Mwandawiro is Assistant Director and Chief Research Officer at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) in Nairobi, Kenya.

Charles studied Medical Parasitology at the University of Nairobi and was awarded a PhD in medical entomology from Nagasaki University, Japan.  

Since receiving his PhD, his research has focused on school health, especially school-based parasite control. He is currently leading a team that is monitoring and evaluating the impact of Kenya's National School-based Deworming Programme.

Alongside his research, Charles is also responsible for KEMRI's resource mobilization.

Reflected his position as a leading parasitologist, Charles was appointed by the WHO as a Temporary Advisor in the mapping and control of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), especially Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH) and Schistosomiasis, in the African region.

Charles is a committee member and chair of the Operational Research Stream of the STH Advisory Committee of the US based, Children Without Worms.

Charles also lectures in medical entomology at the Institute of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases in Nairboi, Kenya. He has supervised 11 Masters and 4 PhD students in the area of neglected tropical diseases.
